US would consider providing India access to terrorist David Headley

Washington: The United States has said that it would consider providing India access again to confessed Pakistani-American terrorist David Headley now that the trial of his friend Pakistan-born Canadian Tahawwur Rana is over."We've said in the past we've granted that access (to Headley) and, obviously, there was the trial that took place. But in the future we would consider providing that access again," State Department Spokesperson Mark Toner told reporters on Friday.Headley, aka Daood Gilani, who has pleaded guilty to his role in the 2008 Mumbai terror attack, was the star prosecution witness in the case against his Pakistani military school friend Rana, on charges of to Lashkar-e-Taiba(LeT), blamed for the Mumbai attack.

A team of Indian officials had questioned Headley in Chicago last year.

Asked to comment on a Chicago jury's verdict clearing Rana of helping in the Mumbai attack, but holding him guilty of providing material support to LeT, Toner said: "It was clearly a judicial proceeding."

"The jury announced its verdict. I don't have any comment on the verdict other than to say he is going to jail for 30 years possibly, and it's an indication that we will hold these people accountable."

"Thursday's verdict sends a clear message that all those who help terrorists will be brought to justice, and all those who seek to facilitate violence abroad, as Mr. Rana did, will be held accountable," he added echoing US Attorney Patrick Fitzgerald, who led the US case against Rana.

Gaddafi forces using sex drugs for rape?

UNITED NATIONS: The chief prosecutor for the International Criminal Court said on Wednesday he is investigating whether Libyan leader Muammar Gadhafi provided Viagra-type drugs to Libyan soldiers to promote the rape of women during the current conflict.

Luis Moreno Ocampo said his office is collecting evidence on rapes and has become "more convinced" that Gadhafi decided to punish women by using rape as a weapon, which would be a new method in Libya civil war of instilling fear and trying to control the population.

He told a news conference after briefing the UN Security Council on Darfur that some witnesses confirmed the Libyan government was buying containers of Viagra-type drugs to carry out the policy, and "to enhance the possibility to rape.'' "We are trying to see who was involved," Moreno Ocampo said.

He said it was difficult to know how widespread the use of rape is in Libya. "We're getting important information," Moreno Ocampo said. "In some areas we had a number of a hundred people raped. The issue for us was, can we attribute these rapes to Gadhafi himself, or is it something that happened in the barracks.''

The UN Security Council voted unanimously on February 26 to refer the Libyan crisis to the International Criminal Court, the world's permanent war crimes tribunal.

On May 16, Moreno Ocampo asked judges to issue arrest warrants for Gadhafi, his son Seif al-Islam Gadhafi and intelligence chief Abdullah al-Sanoussi, accusing them of committing crimes against humanity by targeting civilians in a crackdown against rebels who are trying to end his more than 40 year rule.

Judges are now evaluating the evidence and must decide whether to confirm the charges and issue international arrest warrants. If the arrest warrants are issued, Moreno Ocampo said he may add the charge of rape to the case.

Moreno Ocampo said the two cases against the three top Libyans involve the shooting of civilians in demonstrations in different cities at the beginning of the conflict and the arrest, torture and forced disappearance of people, particularly in areas under Gadhafi's control.

But he told reporters that witnesses interviewed by investigators asked why the court was focusing on arrests, tortures and disappearances over the last three months because "it happened for 20 years – so we'd like you also to review all of them.''

Software giant Microsoft finally lost its battle over Word patent

TORONTO: Software giant Microsoft finally lost its battle over Word patent with Toronto's i4i Inc.

Rejecting Microsoft's appeal, the US supreme court upheld the 2009 lower court order against Microsoft to pay $290 million in damages to the Toronto firm for infringing its patent.

The Canadian company had taken the software giant to court in the US in 2007 over violations of its patent in Word applications and won the case and got $290 million in damages in December 2009.

In its lawsuit, i4i had claimed that the world's biggest software company infringed on a patent granted to it in 1998.

The patent pertained to i4i's technology that can open documents using the XML computer programming language and manipulate complex data in electronic documents. The technology allows users to sort out and manage tons of information by turning complex documents into more accessible databases.

The Toronto company claimed that Microsoft violated its patent when it created Word 2003 and Word 2007 software. Later in 2009, the US court of appeals upheld the lower court order banning Microsoft from selling its patent-infringing Word processing software from January 2010.

Though Microsoft complied with the court order by stopping selling versions of Word with the disputed technology from that date, it challenged the verdict in the US supreme court in August last year, arguing that the current system is disproportionately loaded in favour of patent holders.

i4i chairman Loudon Owen called Thursday's court decision "extremely gratifying'' for his small firm. "It has also become one of the most important business-law cases decided by the Supreme Court in decades,'' he told the local media.

Bollywood :Ad filmmaker, lyricist Prasoon Joshi turned composer for Prakash Jha's "Aarakshan"

New Delhi: Ad filmmaker-turned-lyricist Prasoon Joshi has another role to play - he has turned composer for Prakash Jha's "Aarakshan", and says it was a wonderful experience.

Joshi, who has written four songs for the movie, has composed one song named "Kaun si dor" for the album, which has otherwise been composed by popular trio Shankar-Ehsaan-Loy.

Narrating how he took to composing the song, Joshi said: "'Kaun si dor' is a wonderful song. The thought was to centre it on a philosophical level but in a common man's understanding. Often whilst writing, a composition comes up in my head and while writing this song, the composition just flowed through my mind."

When Joshi bounced the idea to Jha and Shankar Mahadevan, "they loved it", he says.

"Shankar was graceful enough to keep this as part of the album and I am genuinely thankful. 'Kaun si Dor' comes at a poignant juncture in the film and I am looking forward to the music of this film," he said in a press statement.

The rendition for Joshi's composition has been done by classical vocalist Chunnulal Misra.

Joshi, a well-known advertising professional, has a lineage when it comes to music, too. Both his parents are classically trained and he himself is trained in Hindustani classical vocals. He has composed and sung a few of his ad jingles as well in the past.

Working with Jha has been "wonderful", says Joshi.

"Prakash Jha is a remarkable director, who does thoroughly researched films which are very unique, have strong narrative and original plots across different genres, piloting fresh trails, and commercially viable. He always encourages fresh and unique ideas. It indeed was an wonderful experience to work with him," he said.

"Aarakshan" features Amitabh Bachchan, Saif Ali Khan, Manoj Bajpayee and Deepika Padukone. The movie, based on caste-based reservations in Indian society, will release in August.

Ramdev declares assets, doesn't disclose all

Baba Ramdev revealed his wealth but remained silent on companies run by his trusts.

Police action against Baba Ramdev was undertaken on Sonia Gandhi's instructions !

Panaji: The police action against Baba Ramdev and his followers at Delhi's Ramlila Ground last week was undertaken on Congress president Sonia Gandhi's instructions, Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader Arti Mehra said on Thursday, demanding an apology from her.Mehra, who was mayor of Delhi in 2008, is now the BJP's secretary in-charge of Goa and was speaking to reporters in Panaji, after a meeting of the party's local unit."The orders for police action (at Ramlila Ground) was given by Sonia Gandhi. Information available to us through our sources and the manner in which Prime minister Manmohan Singh reacted to the police attack on innocent protesting citizens showed that the orders came from her," Mehra said.

"We demand an apology from Sonia Gandhi. On the one hand, her son Rahul Gandhi shows 'concern' for the farmers in UP (Uttar Pradesh), but acts contrary when it comes to Ramdev Baba," she added.

Mehra alleged that the Congress-led government and the Congress party were walking disparate paths and that bad decisions taken by Sonia Gandhi and her Congress high command were heaped on the government set-up.

"The Congress party clearly feels that the UPA government headed by Dr Manmohan Singh has become a liability and is distancing itself from the actions of the government," she alleged.

Tahawwur Rana in the Mumbai attack was "not a setback" :India

New Delhi: India today said the decision of a US court to clear Pakistan-born Canadian businessman Tahawwur Rana in the Mumbai attack was "not a setback" as India was still investigating the case.

"We do not see it as a setback for India as the case is still under investigation. In our handling of terrorism in India, we don't rely on other country's evidences and investigation," U.K. Bansal, secretary (Internal Security) in the home ministry, told reporters here.

On Thursday, Rana was cleared in the 2008 Mumbai terrorist attacks, but was convicted of helping the Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT) which India holds responsible for the strike.

"We will have to study the judgment. The judicial system in both the countries is different and it is too early to say anything," Bansal said.

"The matter is still under investigation. It has to be seen what our courts say when the matter is presented to them after investigations are over," added Bansal.

Rana was also convicted for his role in a thwarted plot targeting a Danish newspaper that printed controversial cartoons of the Prophet Muhammad, according to Chicago Sun Times.

Rana now faces up to 30 years in prison.

A total of 166 people were killed in the mayhem let loose by 10 Pakistani terrorists during the 60-hour Mumbai terror attack Nov 26-28, 2008.

India called upon the international community to promote generic medicine for HIV ,AIDS etc

New Delhi: India has called upon the international community to promote generic medicine, specially for diseases like HIV and AIDS, to make treatment affordable.

Speaking at the high level meeting of the General Assembly on HIV and AIDS in New York on Wednesday, Health Minister Ghulam Nabi Azad urged the international community for lifting the "barriers" of Intellectual Property Rights and patents from medicines.

Generic drugs are medicines which are sold without brand name, making them cheaper.

"The international community has to dismantle barriers that obstruct universal access to treatment. A key barrier in universal access to treatment is the high cost of Anti Retro Viral medicines," Azad said.

"Pharmaceutical companies in my country have been providing high quality and affordable drugs for use not only in India but also supplying to around 200 countries. I would also like to take this opportunity to make it abundantly clear that these generic drugs are not cheap in terms of quality," he added.

New Delhi: A grieving Zubeida S. Ali, sister of veteran artist M.F. Husain, today mourned the death of her brother and regretted she could not spend much time together in his last years.

Zippo lighter diversifying in the Indian market with a range of lifestyle products

New Delhi: Some time next week, the 500 millionth Zippo lighter will come off the production line at Bradford in the US but then, there's a lot more than lighters to the 79-year-old company that is diversifying in the Indian market with a range of lifestyle products.

"We are planning to soon introduce Zippo branded watches, fragrances and apparel in India," David B. Warfel, the company's director for global marketing, told the media.

"Zippo is no more only a lighter brand as the business has been diversified from a windproof lighter brand to a lifestyle brand - maintaining Zippo's heritage, independent values and brand identity.

"In recent months, the company has stepped up its effort to diversify by launching the fragrance and other Zippo-branded products, such as casual clothing, watches and camping supplies."

And that's how India comes into the picture.

"India has been on our radar for four years. It was a question of creating a functional critical mass, to expand our product portfolio and grow our retail distribution," Warfel explained.

Towards this, Zippo is currently present at 150 retail points in India.

"We have tied up with some leading MBOs (multi-brand outlets) in the country for shop-in-shop formats and also plan to open exclusive retail points for Zippo across cities. Zippo lighters are sold through counters at retail shops in malls and high streets.

"Among Tier II and III cities, we are covering almost 20 to 25 markets and the response has been really good so far. But our key focus lies in the top 10 cities of the country," Warfel explained.

As part of these plans, come June 2012 and the company hopes to open a flagship store in a "high-traffic retail environment" in New Delhi or Mumbai.

Elaborating on this, Warfel said: "We have created a Zippo concept store in the US and we are going to take the same model globally. All our flagship stores in various countries will follow the same pattern to keep the brand heritage alive.

"Once we open our flagship store in India, we would like to carry on the distributor route as it largely revolves around their understanding and prevailing trends in the market," he added.

Apart from its manufacturing facility at Bradford in Pennsylvania, Zippo currently sources some of its products from countries like Italy, China, Japan and South Korea.

Asked whether there were any such plans from India, Warfel said: "As far as partnerships are concerned, it is too early to comment. We are at a very nascent stage and growing along with the market trend; so such partnerships are not in the pipeline right now."

India cannot take the West Indies team lightly:Virat Kohli

Port of Spain: India enjoy a 2-0 lead in the five-match cricket One-Day Internationals series, but middle-order batsman Virat Kohli says that the visitors cannot take the West Indies lightly.

Kohli, who scored a match-winning 81 in the second ODI here on Wednesday, said it was good for the team to win two consecutive matches, but making a hat-trick will be tough.

"(The West Indies) have good batsmen in the side and we know we cannot take them lightly. It's good to win two matches in a row, and we truly want to win every match we play but that doesn't happen in cricket all the time," said Kohli, who was adjudged as the Man of the Match.

Kohli said the pitch at the Queen's Park Oval played slightly better.

"It was coming well onto the bat with the new ball. Probably better than the last game, but the old ball was pretty much the same, pretty slow, and it was raining in between, so some patches were wet, so the ball was skidding," he said.

Play for India, not a small thing :Virat Kohli

Port of Spain:"I have been given a chance to play for India, which is not a small thing because you have 20 others with same talent waiting for that kind of a chance. So why waste the opportunity given to me. I got the odd game here and there in 2009. I was a replacement player then. I was very determined to do well at each opportunity," said Kohli, who was adjudged as the Man of the Match.

Kohli, who scored 2037 ODI runs enroute to his 81, said he is determined to do well and his image of being arrogant is now a thing of the past.

"I was always determined to do well. Probably what I was doing off the field was not on at that time. I probably got carried away. Someone or the other always tells you that this has been spoken about you at this place. I decided to change. I decided myself. No one can force myself to change. I had to do it. It was time to change," he said.

The 22-year-old Delhi boy said that he likes to reply his critics, who always questioned his attitude.

"I think I have answered that too much. But I have enjoyed answering that question every time. I feel good with myself for having changed what people did not like initially and then transform into that performances. I feel good about it but it's not something I want to be too proud of and get relaxed. I don't want to get complacent. The whole point in changing from that kind of attitude to this current attitude to perform consistently. I want to keep going," he said.

Asked if he was trying to match his senior team mates Sachin Tendulkar or Virender Sehwag, Kohli said: "It was never in my mind that I had to be at the level of them in fame or whatever. Those guys have been there, done that. It has taken a lot of time to reach where they are. There is no point in comparing oneself to them."

Kohli wants to pursue his own style of play, which he has realised in the last one and half years.

"Everyone has their own style of batting. I have realised that in the last one and half years. I admire them but there is no use batting like them. Take the first match of the World Cup. If I had tried to bat like Viru bhai, I would have perhaps ended up scoring 40. They have a special ability that has made them legends of the game. There is no point in doing what is not my strength," he said.

Asked about his leadership qualities, Kohli said: "I can't say anything about it (leadership quality). I am honest in whatever question is thrown at me at every press conference. I don't really work on it."

China military official confirms first aircraft carrier

HONG KONG: A top Chinese military official has confirmed that Beijing is building an aircraft carrier, marking the first acknowledgement of the ship's existence from China's secretive armed forces.

In an exclusive interview published on Tuesday, the Hong Kong Commercial Daily quoted Chen Bingde, chief of the General Staff of the People's Liberation Army, as saying the 300 metre (990-foot) refurbished Soviet carrier "is being built, but it has not been completed".

He declined to elaborate although there has been wide speculation that the vessel was nearly finished after the ship, then called the Varyag, was reportedly purchased in 1998.

It is currently based in the northeast port city of Dalian.

The ship, which an expert on China's military has said would be used for training and as a model for a future indigenously-built ship, was originally built for the Soviet navy. Construction was interrupted by the collapse of the Soviet Union in 1991.

The Hong Kong paper quoted anonymous sources as saying the carrier will be launched by the end of June at the earliest.

Qi Jianguo, assistant to the chief of the PLA's general staff, told the newspaper that the carrier would not enter other nations' territories, in accordance with Beijing's defensive military strategy.

"All of the great nations in the world own aircraft carriers -- they are symbols of a great nation," he was quoted as saying.

But China is involved in a number of simmering marine territorial disputes.

China has claimed mineral rights around the disputed Spratly Islands in the South China Sea, and argued that foreign navies cannot sail through the area without Beijing's permission.

In September, Japan and China clashed over the disputed Senkaku Islands, known as the Diaoyu Islands in China, located in the East China Sea.

In April, Admiral Robert Willard, head of US Pacific Command, said China's navy had adopted a less aggressive stance in the Pacific after protests from Washington and other nations in the region.

The PLA -- the largest army in the world -- is hugely secretive about its defence programmes, which benefit from a big military budget boosted by the nation's runaway economic growth.

India vs. West Indies:Virat Kohli said the pressure situations bring the best

PORT OF SPAIN : After guiding India to a seven-wicket victory over the West Indies in the second ODI with his match winning 81-run knock, Virat Kohli said the pressure situations bring the best out of the current bunch of Indian players.

"The young Indians players want to handle pressure. We want to improve in every game. Take as much responsibility as we can. We want to make use of every opportunity," said Kohli at the post-match press conference.

Chasing a target of 241 on a sluggish wicket, Kohli played a stellar hand, first partnering opener Parthiv Patel (56) for 120-run second wicket stand and then withstanding a little tremor induced by the rain breaks.

Revealing that the Indian team think-tank wants him, Suresh Raina and Rohit Sharma to take on as much responsibility as they could in the on-going ODI series, Kohli said, "We have been around for sometime and so are expected to take most of the responsibility to ensure that others bat with a lot more freedom, without much pressure."

For someone who values playing for India so much, Kohli is surprisingly always in a very relaxed mood in the middle and never appears to be in a state of panic.

"Earlier, there were occasions when I had a rush of blood. It cost me, my team. Now I know that if I stay long enough, I could change gear and things would never go out of control.

"You know you have strokes, you could be patient, learn to respect good balls. Batting at number three gives me this advantage," he explained.

Kohli said rather than emulating the seniors in the team, he likes to play his style of cricket.

"For instance, in the first game of World Cup, if I had tried to ape Veeru bhai (where he blasted Bangladesh for 153 runs), I would have been out for 40.

"You don't compare yourself with Sachin or Dhoni. They have seen that, done that. You admire them but then you have to be yourself."

Speaking on the second ODI, Kohli said the new ball was coming on to the bat but the old ball was sometimes skidding and when pitched on a dry area, was stopping.

"It still was as slow as the first one-day wicket with the old ball," said Kohli.

Septuagenarian Gandhian Anna Hazare should not fast frequently:Doctor

New Delhi: Septuagenarian Gandhian Anna Hazare should not fast frequently as it may worsen his health, his doctor said today.

Hazare began a daylong token fast at Rajghat, the memorial to Mahatma Gandhi, to denounce the police crackdown on yoga guru Baba Ramdev's anti-corruption protest last week.

Speaking to the media over phone from Pune, Parag Sancheti, 73-year-old Hazare's doctor from Sancheti Institute of Orthopaedics and Rehabilitation, said: "Considering his age and his health condition we suggested that he should not fast frequently as it will have an impact on his health."

"Apart from osteoarthritis, Hazare also has high cholesterol and blood pressure and we strongly recommend him not to go in for such frequent fasts. His health deteriorated because of his protest in April," Sancheti said.

The anti-corruption crusader went on a 97-hour fast in April in New Delhi demanding a strong anti-graft Lokpal bill.

Hazare announced at Rajghat that he would fast again from Aug 16 if the proposed anti-graft Lokpal bill was not passed.

"If the Lokpal bill is not passed, I will go on fast from Aug 16 at Jantar Mantar," Hazare said.

Sancheti said: "Although Hazare's body is used to such fasts, we have advised him to eat at regular intervals and not to skip meals."

"After the fast in April, Hazare had steroid injections and was on continuous medication. Besides this, he was undergoing physiotherapy and traction," Sancheti added.

Yoga guru Baba Ramdev threatened to form an armed force

Haridwar: Baba Ramdev today threatened to form an armed force if there was a repeat of the police crackdown against him. The government reacted sharply, terming the remark "anti-national" and said the yoga guru had revealed his "true colours".Ramdev, whose health deteriorated on the fifth day of his fast against corruption and for steps to bring back black money stashed away abroad, said in Haridwar: "We will build an army of 11,000 men and women."Ramdev stressed that while he does not favour an armed rebellion, he would not allow the security forces to act like they did at Delhi's Ramlila Ground when they broke up a meeting attended by thousands of his supporters post-midnight June 4.

"Dedicated young men and women will be imparted 'shaastra' (vedic education) and 'shastra' (arms training)," he said.

"These young people should be 35-40 years old. Not only men, young women must also join them. They must be dedicated, ready to make the ultimate sacrifice. They will be given arms training."

But, hours later his close aide Balkrishna clarified the remark.

"Ramdev did not intend to create an armed force of youth but to train them in self-defence through martial arts to enable them join the fight against corruption," he told to the media.

"It is not any kind of force. What he (Ramdev) meant was training in self-defence so that the youth can work effectively against corruption and, if needed, protect the weak," he said, adding that the youth could be imparted training in judo and other martial skills.

In New Delhi, Ramdev's remark drew sharp reactions from the Congress and the central government.

Union Home Minister P. Chidambaram told reporters that Ramdev has "exposed his true colours and intentions".

"Let him do so. And the law will deal with that," he said on Ramdev's intention of arming his supporters.

Minister of State in the Prime Minister's Office (PMO) V. Narayanasamy said: "It is very clear that the statement given by Baba Ramdev is anti-national and action should be taken against him."

In an interview to official broadcaster Doordarshan, Chidambaram said the apex body of the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) had propped up Ramdev as its patron for an anti-corruption front announced April 2 in Karnataka.

"You should know who is behind Baba Ramdev. We go back to a March 2011 at a meeting in Putthur in Karnataka, the Akhil Bharatiya Pratinidhi Sabha, the apex body of the RSS, decided to organise support of all individuals and institutions that were ranged in the fight against corruption," Chidambaram said.

The Congress called Ramdev's plan to form an armed force "illegal and unconstitutional".

Congress spokesperson Jayanthi Natarajan said the government should take due action to maintain law and order and to prevent any communal conflagration.

Meanwhile, senior Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader Sushma Swaraj travelled from New Delhi to Haridwar to meet Ramdev and express her party's support to his agitation.

Sushma Swaraj said the yoga guru had lost about five kilograms of weight since the start of his hunger strike in Delhi's Ramlila Ground Saturday.

"The entire nation is worried about Baba's health. So, being the leader of the opposition, I thought of visiting him personally," she told reporters in Haridwar.

But the BJP sought to distance itself from Ramdev's plans to raise an armed force for self-defence.

Party spokesperson Shahnawaz Hussain said the BJP supports "non-violent" movements.

Speaking to reporters in Haridwar, Balkrishna said that Ramdev will announce the financial details of his oragnaisation on Thursday.

"We will come out with financial details of Patanjali Yogapeeth and all our companies by tomorrow. We will upload it on our website also. It will have financial details of Patanjali and other businesses and companies associated with it. It will have all financial details," he said.

Senior Congress leader Digvijay Singh had questioned how Ramdev amassed so much of assets and demanded a probe into it.

India successfully test fired its nuclear-capable Prithvi II missile

Bhubaneswar: India today successfully test fired its nuclear-capable Prithvi II missile from a military base in Orissa, defence ministry sources said.

The surface-to-surface missile with a range of 350 km was fired from the Integrated Test Range at Chandipur-on-sea in Balasore, about 230 km from here.

Prithvi is India's first indigenously built ballistic missile. It is one of the five missiles being developed under the country's Integrated Guided Missile Development Programme.

The missile, with a flight duration of 483 seconds and reaching a peak altitude of 43.5 km, has the capability to carry a 500 kg warhead.

Prithvi, which has features to deceive anti-ballistic missiles, uses an advanced inertial guidance system with manoeuvring capabilities and reaches its target with a few metres of accuracy.

India vs. West Indies:Virat Kohli and Parthiv Patel scored half centuries

Port of Spain: Virat Kohli and Parthiv Patel scored half centuries after leg spinner Amit Misra took his career best figures to guide India to a seven-wicket victory over West Indies in a rain-marred second ODI here on Wednesday.

Kohli (81) and Patel (56) stitched a 120-run second wicket stand as India chased a revised target of 183 from 37 overs due to rain with 20 balls to spare at the Queen's Park Oval.

The West Indies had scored 240/9 in their 50 overs with Lendl Simmons (53) and Ramnaresh Sarwan (56) scoring fifties before Misra trigerred a middle-order collapse with his 4-31.

India, playing their first ODI series after their World Cup triumph, now lead the five-match series 2-0 despite the absence of captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni and star batsman Sachin Tendulkar.

The tourist, however, had an early setback when they lost opener Shikher Dhawan (3) early in the third over but man of the match Kohli smashed six fours and a six in his 103 balls and Patel played a blistering knock off 64 deliveries to put India back on track.

Patel was caught behind off leg-spinner Anthony Martin in the 27th over, and Kohli was caught at long-off off leg-spinner Devendra Bishoo four overs later.

Rain halted India's march for 80 minutes but the visitors were never in a spot of bother with skipper Suresh Raina (26 not out) hitting the winning runs for India.

Put to bat, the West Indies had looked set for a 250 plus total when they were 192 for three at the end of the 41st over and a set Ramesh Sarwan at the crease.

But that was when the script went awry as four batsmen, including Sarwan, fell within five runs and the home team was left struggling at 197/7 with 38 balls remaining.

Mishra did the maximum damage for India, Captain Darren Sammy (22), along with Ravi Rampaul (14), added 31 valuable runs towards the end and lent respectability to the final score.

The hosts were off to a solid start with Simmons and Kirk Edwards (25) forging a 57-run opening stand. After Edwards was caught behind off Mishra, Simmons and Sarwan added another 67 runs.

Actor Akshay Kumar is in action mode hosting "Khatron Ke Khiladi 4" and "Housefull 2"

New Delhi: Actor Akshay Kumar is in action mode - on one hand, he is hosting "Khatron Ke Khiladi 4" while, on the other, he flagged off the opening scene of "Housefull 2" by shooting a parachute stunt on the outskirts of London.

"Akshay has never done anything like this before and he's really excited. I'm cool because I know the greatest stuntman in the country will pull off the shot effectively. I couldn't have asked for a better first shot," said director Sajid Khan.

After getting the required permits to shoot live in the residential area, the 43-year-old took free-fall tests to parachute into the opening scene.

"The scene is integral to the story and not just a publicity gimmick. We've kept it strictly under wraps because with six cameras stationed on the sets, we want to capture people's reactions as Akshay jumps down from the heavens above," said Khan.

Co-produced by Sajid Nadiadwala and Eros International, "Housefull 2" also stars John Abraham, Rishi Kapoor, Randhir Kapoor, Asin Thottumkal, Zarine Khan, Shreyas Talpade, Jacqueline Fernandez and Mithun Chakraborty.

Archie, will soon be dancing to Bollywood numbers

New Delhi: The iconic red-haired Archie, a comic book heartthrob with a perpetually hassled look and two girlfriends, will soon be dancing to Bollywood numbers in the book's Indian avatar published in Hindi and Malayalam.

Seventy years after its birth in the US, 12 titles of the popular Archie comics will be published in 2011 by Variety Book Depot and distributed by EuroBooks, a leading publisher of children's books in India, a release by the publisher said late Monday.

Commenting on the launch of the book in Hindi and Malayalam, Jon Goldwater, co-CEO of Archie Comics, said: "Archie Comics have entertained fans for several generations. We wanted to give our fans in India something they could relate to. The move is to bring in some Indian flavour to the comic. It will be the same Archie, the same Veronica and Betty but with a 'desi' twist."

"Fans can now expect Archie and Veronica to dance to the popular Bollywood number 'Aakhon ki gustakhiyaa' or see the gang sing some popular songs like the college classic 'Purani jeans' and oldie 'Kankariya maar ke jagaya' as smart chicks walk past the brood," he added.

The company plans to launch 36 titles by 2012.

The 12 titles in the first phase will include seven titles of the Archie-Betty-Veronica marriage saga. The books have been planned in such a sequence that they will bring to an end the vexed love triangle between Archie, Betty and Veronica.

The remaining five titles will explore the world of Archie and his friends through their funny escapes. Each title will be priced at Rs.30.

The 12 titles in the launch include "Archie Marries Veronica: The Proposal", "Archie Marries Veronica: The Wedding", "Archie Marries Veronica: It's Twins", "Archie Marries Betty: Will You Marry Me?", "Archie Marries Betty: The Wedding", among others.

Archie made his first appearance on Dec 22, 1941. Drawn by Bob Montana and written by Vic Bloom, publisher John Goldwater hoped the comic book would appeal to the fans of Andy Hardy movies starring Mickey Rooney.

Goldwater promoted Archie as America's newest boyfriend, "Archibald 'Chick' Andrews", modelled on a red-haired friend. He gave Archie two girlfriends, Betty and Veronica.

Eventually, Goldwater felt that Archie needed a good friend. And Jughead was born.

Over the years, Archie's gang grew and even changed with the times. In 2010, the publishers introduced the first gay character Kevin Keller in Archie comics.

Anna Hazare Fast, hundreds of supporters gathered near Rajghat

New Delhi: Singing devotional songs and holding placards, hundreds of supporters gathered near Rajghat in the capital today morning to support veteran Gandhian Anna Hazare and participate in a day-long fast to protest the crackdown on yoga guru Baba Ramdev.

With the weather turning a little benevolent and the tricolour fluttering in the background, a smiling Anna sat on the raised platform and waved to the supporters who raised slogans like 'Bharat Mata ki Jai!'.

Holding placards with slogans like "This is the second war of independence", people started thronging Rajghat, the memorial to Mahatma Gandhi, as early as 7 a.m. although the fast was not to begin before 10 a.m. There was also a heavy police presence at the site.

The fast will go on till 6 p.m.

One of the first ones to reach the venue was Kuldeep Singh of the Bhrashtachar Virodhi Party who came with his friends from Punjab to support Anna's movement.

"We have come here to support Anna. What the government did at the Ramlila ground was wrong and it should not have taken such a step. Corruption is a big issue and we have the right to protest against it," Kuldeep Singh told the media.

"Anna and Baba Ramdev should come together and fight this battle together," he added.

In April, Hazare's five-day fast drew widespread support across the country and forced the government to set up a joint panel to draft a Lokpal bill to combat corruption in high places.

Vaibhav Kumar, one of the many young supporters of Anna, said: "Just like Gandhiji took the path of non-violence, Anna Hazare is doing the same and we are supporting that."

"What happened at the Ramlila ground is shameful. The people who gathered there were protesting peacefully. If the government can baton-charge peaceful protestors, then they should remove Gandhiji's photo from all government offices and the currency notes as well," he added.

Wearing a Nehru cap, another young Anna supporter said: "We are not aligned to any political party. Our only aim is to fight corruption."

Earlier in the day, before proceeding towards the fast site, Anna Hazare said: "The government action at Ramlila ground was an attack on democracy."

Former top cop and activist Kiran Bedi said: "We need a stronger law against corruption which can be trusted. The system should be approachable. We will consider ourselves free only when India is free from corruption. It is a second war of independence."

Police cracked down post-midnight on Saturday on an anti-graft protest by close to a lakh of followers of yoga guru Baba Ramdev at Ramlila ground here forcing them to disperse. Ramdev was arrested, flown in a special BSF plane to Dehradun and taken thence to Hardwar near where his Patanjali Ashram is located.

India's growth projected to ease to 8 percent:World Bank

Washington: With India's growth projected to ease to 8 percent in fiscal 2011-12 from 8.8 percent last fiscal, South Asia is headed for a slower, but still buoyant 7.5 percent growth in 2011, says the World Bank.

After growing at a robust 9.3 percent during calendar year 2010, activity in South Asia moderated in the first quarter of 2011, it said in its June 2011 edition of Global Economic Prospects.

Noting that the regional economic slowdown in 2011 mainly reflects a fall-off in activity in India, which represents about 80 percent of South Asia's GDP, the Bank said the slowdown stems from a moderation in domestic demand.

Elevated inflationary pressures have cut into disposable incomes and household spending and more restrictive monetary conditions have contributed to a dampening of investment activity, the GEP noted

This slowdown partly also reflects macroeconomic policy tightening aimed at curbing stubbornly high price pressures and reducing large fiscal deficits, the Bank said.

The moderate compression of domestic demand has been partly offset by strong exports, as countries in South Asia have benefited from robust import demand in developing countries, recovering demand in high-income countries and resilient worker remittances inflows.

The Bank suggested that as they put the financial crisis behind them, developing countries need to focus on tackling country-specific challenges such as achieving balanced growth through structural reforms, coping with inflationary pressures, and dealing with high commodity prices.

In contrast, prospects for high-income countries and many of Europe's developing countries remain clouded by crisis-related problems such as high unemployment, household and banking-sector budget consolidation, and concerns over fiscal sustainability among other factors.

The World Bank projected that as developing countries reach full capacity, growth will slow from 7.3 percent in 2010 to around 6.3 percent each year from 2011-2013.

High-income countries will see growth slow from 2.7 percent in 2010 to 2.2 percent in 2011 before picking up to 2.7 percent and 2.6 percent in 2012 and 2013 respectively.

"Globally, GDP is expected to grow 3.2 percent in 2011 before edging up to 3.6 percent in 2012," said Justin Yifu Lin, the World Bank's Chief Economist and Senior Vice President for Development Economics.

"But further increases in already high oil and food prices could significantly curb economic growth and hurt the poor."

Rohit Sharma hit an unbeaten 68 to guide India to a comfortable win over the West Indies

Port of Spain: Rohit Sharma hit an unbeaten 68 to guide India to a comfortable four-wicket win over the West Indies in the first one-day international of the five match series at the Queens Park Oval here on Monday.Sharma's 75-ball knock helped India recover from a shaky 61 for three to successfully chase down a modest West Indies total of 214/9 in 44.5 overs with four wickets in hand. Sharma was also adjudged as the Man of the Match.

West Indies aided by Ramnaresh Sarwan (56) and Marlon Samuels (55), who put on 82 for the fourth wicket, got to a respectable total on a challenging track. Harbhajan Singh finished as the pick of either side's bowlers with 3-32.

India got off to a quick start with Shikhar Dhawan (51) and Parthiv Patel (13) hitting a string of boundaries. But Patel's run out, a brilliant work by Dwayne Bravo and Carlton Baugh, triggered a mini collapse.

Virat Kohli was caught behind off Ravi Rampaul for two and Subramaniam Badrinath (17) under-edged leggie Devendra Bishoo through to Baugh to leave India struggling at 61-3.

But Sharma stitched two crucial partnerships with Dhawan and skipper Suresh Raina (43 not out) to bail out India.

Sharma was first involved in a 43-run stand with Dhawan and then pushed India to a win with a 80-run stand with Raina.

Harbhajan Singh (6 not out) finished things off in style with a six off Darren Sammy.

Earlier, India put up a disciplined bowling performance to restrict the West Indies to 214 for nine. Harbhajan took three wickets while Praveen Kumar, Munaf Patel and Raina chipped in with two wickets each.

Sarwan (56) and Samuels (55) scored 82 runs after West Indies lost three quick wickets. The lower order, however, failed to accelerate in the death overs.

West Indies captain Darren Sammy chose to bat, but Praveen Kumar and Munaf Patel bowled a tight line.

The West Indies lost opener Lendl Simmons and Darren Bravo early. Praveen dismissed Simmons, who played straight into the hands of Harbhajan Singh at mid-off. Bravo was caught by Rohit Sharma in the slips off Munaf.

Kirk Edwards (45) and Sarwan found the going tough and focussed on building a partnership. But the runs dried out as the spinners tightened the noose around them.

Edwards, who was clearly uneasy facing the slow bowlers, was dismissed by Harbhajan, caught by Virat Kohli in the slips.

Sarwan and Samuels then tried to stem the rot but the runs came at a slow pace. Sarwan, who hit five fours in his 94-ball innings, was caught by wicketkeeper off Munaf.

Raina got rid of Samuels, who hit two sixes as he looked to break the shackles.

Dwayne Bravo made a quickfire 22 off 20 balls and Carlton Baugh contributed 16, before Harbhajan got rid of both. The rest of the lower order batting then surrendered.

Salman Khan's "Ready" grosses Rs.41 crore over the weekend

New Delhi: Last year it was his rural action-drama "Dabangg" that broke the dry spell at the box office by earning Rs.48.25 crore in the opening weekend, and this year Salman Khan's comedy "Ready" has brought the much needed respite at the box office by grossing Rs.41 crore over the weekend.

Trade pundits, however, admit that "Ready" is not on par with "Dabangg" in terms of content and appeal and many not enjoy a long innings at the box office, but it is an entertaining film and got a good opening.

"Ready has had a good opening. The occupancy has been 90-95 percent. It is more of a family entertainer. One would not see the kind of action that was in 'Dabangg' and 'Wanted'," Yogesh Raizada, corporate head (Cinemas) of Wave Cinemas told the media.

"Salman is perfect in the film he has done full justice to his character. Asin, is also good in the film," he added.

In contrast to Rs.18 crore "Dabangg", a small town cop drama shot in Wai in Maharashtra and partly in the UAE, "Ready", shot entirely in Thailand, is expensive, has an urban setting and is said to have cost Rs.50 crore.

Released on 1,900 screens, 'Ready' earned Rs.13.5 crore on the opening day, Rs.12.5 crore on Saturday, and Rs.15 crore on Sunday.

"People are enjoying the film a lot, specially Salman Khan, although the shows have not been back-to-back houseful like 'Dabangg' and 'Wanted'. The audis have witnessed 80 percent occupancy," said a source in PVR.

Shot in the exotic locales of Thailand, the film is about happy-go-lucky guy Prem (Salman). He mistakenly helps a girl Sanjana (Asin Thottumkal) escape from marriage and later falls for her. Paresh Rawal, Arya Babbar and Mahesh Manjeraker also feature in it.

Just like Salman's 2008 hit "Wanted", his "Ready" is performing much better in single screen theatres. Confirming this, Piyush Raizada of Delite Cinemas said their shows are going houseful.

"The response to 'Ready' is terrific. Till now, our shows are going housefull. Everyone is appreciating Salman's acting. It is too early to say whether the film will be as big as 'Dabangg' because today, every day counts because of the number of shows being played today," he said.

At a time when most of the big-budgets, with big names like Akshay Kumar starrer "Patiala House", Abhishek Bachchan's "Game" and "Dum Maaro Dum" failed to stir the box office, Salman's magic worked again as "Ready" has brought smiles on the faces of distributors, cinema hall owners and audiences alike.

"I really enjoyed the film. Salman is really good. The first half is a bit boring but the film picks up after the interval and I couldn't stop laughing till the end," said Madhu Verma, a housewife.

College student Priya Chawla liked it so much that she wants to watch it again.

"I found the movie extremely entertaining from the very first scene. Some of the one liners are hilarious and they could become popular pick-up lines. Salman is superb with his comic timing. I plan to watch it again," she said.

Last year too, when the box office was reeling under flops, Salman bailed it out with "Dabangg" and conquered it not only by earning the maximum profits of reportedly Rs.145 crore, but scooped the maximum awards, including a National Award for the best entertainer of the year.

Ritika Sinha, also a college sudent, said the film lacks focus, but has some really good punch lines.

Trade pundits, however, admitted that "Ready" will not enjoy long stay at the box office like "Dabangg".

"The film doesn't seem to sustain for long. We are looking at the occupancy. If it drops down to 50 percent then we will put another film. However, film is doing really well on single screens," said the source from PVR.

Piyush Raizada said: "Gone are the days when films had to run for many days to be declared a hit. Today, in two to three weeks a film is declared a hit."

New Delhi: Amitabh Bachchan may be an avid blogger and in tune with latest technological advancements -- yet the megastar misses the charm of hand-written notes and wonders how computer has eliminated pen and paper from our lives.

"There is a great joy in opening up an ignored cupboard or drawer to find letters or documents and papers that have been left with time," Big B posted on his blog.

"And one of the most time consuming aspects is that you get down to reading them and recollecting those moments gone by or associations long neglected. An old school photograph, a letter form a classmate, some personal parents observations, a card of greeting, a document of the good old times. Such a pleasure to read them and reminisce.

"And there never really is a system where you can put them away safely and in order, so that were you to wish reaching out to them again it would not be such a long process. But we never get down to it.

"Putting it away in specific ornate boxes, gives it a formality that you do not wish to associate with. So best to leave it folded in that torn envelope, crushed and crumpled through time, but still bearing the smell of its time of delivery. Fascinating," he added.

The 68-year-old, who often discusses about latest technologies on his blog, rues how the personal touch is missing these days, thanks to the computer and mobile phones.

"Nowadays. It's storing or putting in drafts on the computer or a file in documents or desktop and clicking them open through a machine!! Somewhere, that personal touch has disappeared. The typed form does not bear any resemblance to the hand written note, smudged ink and perhaps soiled fingers!," he posted.

"That pleasure of opening up a letter and reading a physical form in your hands has simply gone. And I wonder sometimes if it shall ever return. The very best that we do today is to store and save our mobile messages as much as the memory can take it. Then you transfer it to the base computer and hope the damn machine doesn't crash and makes you lose all your information stored. We live in precarious times," he added.

Facebook Inc employees most stressed !

SAN FRANSISCO: Facebook Inc employees are the youngest and most satisfied, and yet the most stressed, among workers at big US technology companies, a survey found.

Facebook had the lowest median age, 26, as well as the highest portion of female workers, 33 per cent, among nine of the industry's top businesses, according to PayScale Inc, a Seattle-based research firm.

Employees at International Business Machines Corp and Hewlett-Packard Co were the oldest surveyed, with a median age of 44.

The social-networking site, run by the 27-year-old Mark Zuckerberg, has thrived by disrupting more-established technologies, such as Internet search and Web portals. That upstart spirit extends to its hiring policies, where workers aren't judged by how many years they've spent in the business.

"We really don't believe that you have to have a lot of experience to make a big difference," Zuckerberg says in a video on the company's career website. "Look at me, right? I started this from college."

PayScale collected online surveys from employees at Inc, Apple Inc, Dell Inc, Facebook, Google Inc, Hewlett-Packard, IBM, Intel Corp and Microsoft Corp. The results aren't verified by the companies and aren't a scientific sampling because they depend on individual workers submitting their data.

Apple's median starting salary was $43,100, excluding employees from the company's retail stores, according to PayScale's survey. That puts it at the bottom on the list. Microsoft was highest, with pay of $86,900.

Apple's designers
Even so, both pay a 15 per cent premium over what workers would get elsewhere, said Al Lee, PayScale's director of quantitative analysis. The difference may stem from the mix of jobs at each company, he said. The pay figures also don't factor in stock options.

"Apple may have a bunch more designers and Web marketers on staff than some of the other companies, and that might pay less," Lee said. The company also employs an in-house support staff to answer calls, unlike some big technology companies.

At Facebook, workers make about $59,100 to start, 49 per cent more than the national average. They get a 13 per cent premium over what employees would earn at similar positions at other companies, the survey found.

That extra pay comes with a dose of pressure, according to PayScale. Employees ranked highest in job satisfaction but also indicated their work was "highly stressful," tying them with Amazon's workers. The seven-year-old Palo Alto, California-based company is constantly innovating in an effort to stay on top of the social-networking field.

Be bold
In the video, Zuckerberg extols workers to "be bold," because "what we're trying to do is different than what everyone else has done before."

As the economy rebounds, the biggest technology are having to work harder to retain talented employees, said Tom Silver, senior vice president of Dice Holdings Inc, a job-listing website. Resurgent demand for corporate technology, the shift to cloud computing and the rise of social media are all increasing the need for staff, he said.

"You've got more traditional companies that need to build and improve infrastructure, they're putting their data in the cloud -- who knew what that was a few years ago?" Silver said. "The demand for tech talent is pretty extreme."

In January, Google announced plans to give employees a 10 per cent raise to retain talent. The company pays the highest premium -- 23 per cent -- above what workers with similar roles at other companies are paid, according to the report.

Employee perks
Google also is known for employee perks, including a gourmet cafeteria and on-site massages. Google was tops in mid- career median pay as well, at $141,000. Its employees ranked as the second-youngest behind Facebook, at 31.

"The most successful companies always pay the most, have the most benefits and the perks," said John Challenger, chief executive officer of Challenger, Gray & Christmas Inc. "Google and Facebook are the stars."

In terms of the pay premium, established technology companies didn't fare as well. Hewlett-Packard, founded in 1939, pays its workers 5 per cent less than the market average, PayScale found. Mid-career workers at the company also make the lowest median salary, $91,600.

IBM, which is celebrating its 100th anniversary this year, pays its workers a 5 per cent premium, putting it third from the bottom. Dell, which pays 4 per cent above the market average, was second-lowest on the list.

"Hewlett-Packard, IBM and Dell are all successful companies, but they're clearly running their business in a different way, in terms of the kind of talent they're recruiting," Lee said.

United States has declined to confirm the death of Ilyas Kashmiri

Washington: Despite Pakistan Prime Minister Yousaf Raza Gilani's reported assertion that Washington has confirmed the death of Ilyas Kashmiri, the United States has declined to do so.

"I don't have any confirmation of that," State Department spokesman Mark Toner told reporters on Monday when asked about Gilani's statement about the killing of a key plotter of the 2008 Mumbai terror attacks in a US drone strike in Pakistan.

Kashmiri, the commander of Pakistan based Harakut-ul-Jihad al-Islami (HuJi), an Al Qaeda-connected terror group is believed to be responsible for several attacks in India and Pakistan.

When told that the US defence department was also not confirming, Toner said he was aware of press reports from Pakistan but repeated: "I would just reiterate we have no confirmation."

"I both have no comment and no way of confirming his death," he added in response to persistent questioning.

Asked what Pakistan had told US officially or non-officially about Kashmiri's death, Toner said: "I'm not going to get in the substance of those discussions."

Earlier Pentagon spokesman Col Dave Lapan simply told reporters: "No confirmation."

"The department of defence has no confirmation," he said when asked about Gilani's reported statement that the US has confirmed the death of Kashmiri.

Bollywood star Shah Rukh Khan, would be releasing his autobiography very soon

Mumbai: Bollywood star Shah Rukh Khan, who has been writing his autobiography since many years now, has revealed that his book is almost near completion and he would be releasing it very soon.

The book that has been christened "Twenty Years In A Decade" will focus on the life of the 45-year-old actor from the year 1991 to 2001.

"I am writing this book since more 10 years now. It is called 'Twenty Years In A Decade' because I felt that in 10 years, I've lived a life of 20 years between 1991 to 2001. It's almost complete now and one of these days when I complete it, I will ask my writer friends to edit it and I'll release it," Shah Rukh told reporters here at an event to release Kanika Dhillon's debut novel "Bombay Duck Is A Fish".

"It's a fun book and is about positivity and hope and its funny, like I am. I've written things about my life in a fun way. Very personal things are there in it, selective memories though. There is a chapter on journalism too," he said.

Although the actor has written about various facets of his life in the book, his favourite chapter remains the one that mentions his parents, who passed away when he was quite young.

"One of my favourite chapters in the book is about my mother and father. Its eight pages long. Whoever writes a book for the first time, parents' mention is always there," said Shah Rukh.

Since he has already tried his hand at writing a book, when asked if he would ever venture into writing a film, Shah Rukh, who is a voracious reader, refused.

"That's an expert thing to do. In every film I work, my inputs are always there but full script, I don't think I know the science or the mathematics behind it. Anyone can write a story but its difficult to write a screenplay."

"I don't know it. Infact a matter of fact, If I get a chance, I would like to do a course of screenplay writing for one-two months. I have read a lot of books on that but I think you need someone to teach you, to actually learn it," he said.

Cricket:Rohit Sharma to guide India to a comfortable win over the West Indies
