Puducherry: Minister of Housing Urban Poverty Alleviation Kumari Selja declared today that the Central Government has approved over 1500000 homes to the underprivileged and poverty-stricken people of the nation till now. The houses are priced above Rs 1 lakh crore and the project is being run by JNNURM (Jawaharlal Nehru National Urban Renewal Mission).
She said that around 145 underprivileged families have been provided homes near Puducherry, absolutely free of cost. This has been done in other parts of India too.
Selja stated that most of the poverty-stricken people residing in the city and remote areas of the country are homeless and that is why it is the duty of the government to provide shelter to them. Providing these poor people with free homes with proper residential facilities has proved to be an ideal solution. Care has been taken to ensure healthy living conditions of these people besides arranging for proper educational facilities to the children of these families.
